I feel as if chan life is short and fleeting.

These new chans are created, start slow, and then gain a good stride. But then, they get too big, too much, too fast, with too little resources and staff to combat the rising tide. Then people want out. This is 8chan now.

I liked 8chan at the start, now its adrift in a sea of uncertainty. When Moot did his last q&a at 4chan he mentioned something to the effect of how other chans have come and gone during 4chans time. Because they can't keep their shit together. I had hope for 8chan, but wouldn't be surprised if the plug is pulled within two years. However, 4chan seems like its slower too these days. Image boards as a form of communicating are in the sunset sage of their life. The users who grew up with them in the 2000s moved on to other platforms (dang blasted social media shit), and the younger folk don't care and some think of places like 4chan as antiquated as IRC.

Finalchan looks like another small start up, but it will more than likely just fizzle out. Perhaps I am just being a negative twat, but eh. Get to adding a /furry/ board and you may gain alot more traffic.

finalchan will probably shutter when the owners lose interest, just like it's predecessor. There aren't any ads and it generates no income, so it doesn't look like anyone expects it to be the next 4chan.

>Get to adding a /furry/ board and you may gain alot more traffic.

no ads, so I'm not even sure the staff cares about an explosion of users. they seem more interested in a steady growth of newcomers entering the fold.

in closing: I'm just an idiot. so what do I know ?

>pre or pos-first exodus?

I had no idea 8chan existed for a year prior to all the uproar that happened around September/October 2014.

I liked 8chan at the start of me using it (late 9/2014). HW seemed in tune and active to the community on /meta/. But the thing is, even at its peak, 8chan never gained the traffic of 4chan. It didn't help things got so segregated with everyone making their own board. Now that things have cooled down, its as slow as ever. And I don't know when but it seems sometime over 2015 HW distanced himself with the site.

I don't blame HW or Moot. The chan gets too large, busy, and becomes a headache and liability (both legally and financially). You grow older, your tastes change, and I am sure (at least in Moot's case) you get sick and tired of dealing with whiny, spazzy chucklefucks within the age range of 14 to 24. You start to feel out of touch with the differed, younger userbase that you used to relate to, and realize you don't fit the mold of their narrative anymore. Why remain admin with all these looming factors in your newly arrived adult life? Sell it, bail, take the money, and now it is someone else's problem. The end.

>finalchan will probably shutter when the owners lose interest, just like it's predecessor.

That's dumb. If you compare us to Openchan, the "predecessor", we've been around twice as long, and all of us actually care about the site still. There were two reasons why Openchan shut down. One being notlily lost interest, and two being that it became a dead board with all the mods leaving. Openchan ran for around 6 months, and it was running at a time where nobody was looking for another imageboard to call home. Finalchan sort of caught a ride at the right time where people were looking for another imageboard. If we do ever close down, I highly doubt it'll be for a loss of interest.

When imageboards grow they tend to get some unwanted attention so maybe something like a warrant canary would be a good idea. I've never seen imageboards use this only VPN services.

Basically you host pic related somewhere and if anything funny is happening behind the scenes to the site and you want to let you user base know then you remove the sign.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_canary
>Warrant canaries have been found to be legal by the United States Justice Department, so long as they are passive in their notifications.

As Finalchan becomes more popular, we will get more shitty posts.
As mods, our goal is to keep Finalchan high quality for you all, while allowing every kind of opinion to thrive. Unfortunately this can end up coming across to people as FAGGOT MODS DELETED MY POSTS FOR NO REASON.
We want to promote discussion, but we also want you fags to have fun, because funposting is fun.

So my question to you (users), is how should we (mods) should best manage the posting on our (all of us) site?
Should we define exactly what kind of shitposting is allowed and where? Should we handle each case individually? Should we just stick to "dont be a dick" and work from there? How should we deal with inexpirienced users that break rules vs users who are intentionally being dicks? Should we use warnings (bans that last a minute or so)? Or do you want us to wield a banhammer like a drunken Thor? Should we post in the thread and explain exactly what the user did wrong?

I give a shit, so id like to know:
How exactly can we serve you guys best?

Note: none of this applies to /sp/, do whatever you animals want there.

Can you add HTTPS to Finalchan?

/tech/ would appreciate it if you respected their freedoms/privacy.

 No.414

HTTPS has been discussed and is seriously being considered for future implementation. One of our concerns with HTTPS is that we want to do it properly, which requires additional funds that haven't been allocated/budgeted for Finalchan. This site generates no income and is funded through the generosity of the staff.

We don't want to just self host a certificate and/or do the minimum in securing a certificate. When we go live with HTTPS, we want it to be in a method that everyone can trust and double check to ensure it's accuracy.

As Finalchan has no account system and the moderation team is instructed to handle illegal content swiftly and with extreme prejudice, encrypting the traffic between our server and the users isn't the highest current priority.

We do appreciate your input and hope you don't view this response as a flippant disregard for your concern. HTTPS is under consideration and is discussed by the team regularly. It's just that as a website with no usernames, passwords, or personal information, encryption is something that isn't our #1 priority.

Thanks.

Shit I forgot it costs dosh to get HTTPS.

A small imagaeboard I used to use eventually got HTTPS through user donations. Maybe you can try that here like a HTTPS donation run.

The policy here seems to be creating boards for topics that get a lot of traction on /r/.

Someone posted this tidbit from the rules page in another thread.

>If you'd like to make a board suggestion, please make a thread on /r/ about it (i.e, "/sci/ Thread!", etc), if it gets enough attention, we might consider making a board dedicated to the subject of the thread.

 No.423

I don't see how this concept would work to get a board like /new/ added.

How would you post different news and happening events and have discussions about them without it being a clusterfuck in one thread?

>I think /r/ is more than adequate to host anime conversations
>but right now it's a challenge to see more than a few posts on each board a day as it is

Maybe that's why there's barely any traffic because there's very little boards to choose from which gives this place an unappealing first impression.

There is 1 anime conversations on this site aside from requests for an anime board.

>Can't make suggestion threads about adding new boards

You just did, and and the response hasn't changed. If you want to discuss anime, by all means do so and we'll see if anyone else chimes in.

 No.416

>>410
The thing is, we're not just going to add boards blindly and have them flop. If you want an anime board, we need to see that the users want one to. We won't make a board just because it'll please one or two people. We need to know if the other users are willing to engage in conversations about whatever the board idea is. We are small, yes, and that's why we don't have many boards.

Another thing that you have to understand, is if we create a board blindly, not only will it have a pretty decent sized chance at failing at our current state, but it will also stretch our content thinner. We already appear to be a dead board even though we get 100 or more posts a day. Stretching our content thinner will just make the place seem even more dead, and therefore, more unappealing to new users.

 No.420

>>416

>The thing is, we're not just going to add boards blindly and have them flop

But if there's a demand for certain boards, like the small demand here for /a/, it wont really be blindly adding boards. A chan without /a/ is like a chan without a random board. And you wouldn't know for sure if a board will flop without adding/testing it first.

>not only will it have a pretty decent sized chance at failing at our current state, but it will also stretch our content thinner.

>stretch our content thinner

I see it more like organizing the content instead of thinning it. I doubt many newcomers except maybe for neets will want to go hunt through 10 pages for threads on /r/ to discuss about common chan topics like /a/.

I've never ran an imageboard, just giving my opinion.

 No.407[Reply]

we need a board creation system
just delete boards that have no content or admin logins relatively quickly and make a longer grace period for mod login and posting than a month.. for smaller boards
I'm sure there's fair ways to have that happen without a growing glut of ghost boards and without robbing small board owners of hard work for free

leave all major legacy board names off limits and let the cream rise to the top

 No.408

Fuck off cripplechan

 No.409

we arent reddit or 8chan. if you want a board, beg for it and talk about it

 No.417

User created boards are a nice feature, and I like the idea. However, it's not for Finalchan.

Finalchan wasn't founded to be a competitor to the other more popular imageboards, it was founded to create a community. That's why we aren't running Tinyboard+Infinity or some other software that would be considered more "keeping up with the Jones'".

And with our current situation and stance on the creation of boards, it basically goes against what we think on the matter. Allowing users to create boards on such a small chan would only lead to a site that looks even more dead to new users.
